Eating junk food, excluding fresh food and green vegetables from our diet, was, until now, only associated with obesity. However, one might be astonished to learn that it can also lead to vision loss.
According to a report by Oddity Central, a 12-year-old child has lost his sight. The reason given by doctors for this should be heeded by everyone, as it is linked to unhealthy lifestyle choices.
According to a report by Oddity Central, the case of a 12-year-old boy living in Massachusetts in the US is an eye-opener. Published in The New England Journal of Medicine, the case details the boy’s experience with nutritional deficiencies.
The child, who is autistic, had aversions to certain food textures and would only consume a limited diet of burgers, fries, ranch dressing, doughnuts, and sugary juices. Despite his parents’ attempts to introduce vegetables in his diet, he refused.
Initially, there were no apparent issues; however, the child suddenly began experiencing vision problems in the morning and evening.
By the time the parents understood the problem, the child’s vision had deteriorated rapidly over a few weeks. One night, he woke up saying he could not see anything.
A visit to the doctor revealed that the child’s optic nerves had weakened due to malnutrition. Doctors attempted to remedy the situation with supplements and a revised diet, but there was no improvement. Even vitamins, supplements, and green vegetables were unable to restore the child’s eyesight.
The doctors at Boston Children’s Hospital explained that the child’s restrictive food intake disorder had prevented him from consuming nutritious food, leading to this outcome.
