The right engine of a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, operated by a Chinese airline, caught fire mid-air and had to return to Rome’s Fiumicino airport shortly after takeoff. The Shenzhen-bound flight was carrying 249 passengers and 16 crew members, all of whom landed safely.
According to airport officials and the Coast Guard, the Hainan Airlines flight turned back towards Rome after dumping fuel over the sea. The airline said the engine caught fire due to a bird strike.
