PM Modi concluded a productive visit to Nigeria on Sunday, where he was awarded the country's second-highest civilian honour.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on his first visit to Nigeria on Sunday, becoming the first Indian leader to visit the West African country in 17 years. He was greeted with great pomp and excitement by the Indian community and the leadership in Nigeria.

Upon his arrival in the capital Abuja, PM Modi met Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and held a closed-door meeting with him wherein they held wide-ranging discussions on the economy, energy, agriculture, security, fintech, small and medium state enterprises and cultural areas.

This was followed by delegation-level talks, where the Prime Minister noted that India and Nigeria enjoy special bonds of friendship defined by a shared past, common democratic values and strong people-to-people ties. The two leaders reviewed the ongoing bilateral cooperation and discussed ways to further strengthen India-Nigeria Strategic Partnership.

What Was PM Modi’s Gift To Nigerian President?

PM Modi gifted a Silofar Panchamrit Kalash to Nigerian President Tinubu, a stunning example of traditional craftsmanship from Kolhapur in Maharashtra. The intricately designed kalash is made from high-quality silver and features elegant engravings that display Kolhapur’s renowned metalwork.

The pot is also adorned with floral patterns, deities and traditional Kolhapur designs. Its handle and lid are crafted in a manner to provide ease of use during religious ceremonies, where the Panchamrit – a sacred mixture of milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar – is served.

During the meeting, President Tinubu appreciated the development cooperation partnership offered by India and acknowledged New Delhi’s efforts to amplify the concerns of developing countries through the Voice of the Global South Summits.

During his visit, Modi was conferred with Nigeria’s second highest national honour ‘The Grand Commander of The Order of the Niger’ by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which the PM said would further invigorate the India-Nigeria friendship.

Notably, Queen Elizabeth is the only foreign dignitary who has been awarded GCON in 1969. This will be the 17th such international award being conferred to PM Modi by a country.

PM Modi is currently in Brazil to attend the two-day G20 Summit in Rio. Soon after his arrival, he was welcomed by the people of Brazil with Sanskrit chants. In Brazil, PM Modi will attend the 19th G20 Summit as a member of the Troika. India is part of the G20 Troika along with Brazil and South Africa.

In the third and final leg of his trip, Modi will visit Guyana from November 19 to 21 at the invitation of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. It will be the first-ever visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana in more than 50 years.
