Ajit Pawar has been considered to be the weakest link of the Mahayuti alliance since its formation and all through the seat-sharing talks for Maharashtra assembly elections 2024. The taunts along this line have come mostly from leaders of Sharad Pawar faction of the NCP who claimed the party patriarch’s nephew “betrayed" the family only to end up in a “weak position" in the Mahayuti.
In the seat-sharing for assembly elections, Ajit Pawar’s NCP was allotted 59 seats, way less than 81 seats allotted to Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and 149 seats the BJP contested on. As per the counting of votes at noon on Saturday, Ajit Pawar’s party clocked in an impressive strike rate of 61%, leading in 36 seats.
In comparison, Sharad Pawar’s NCP has managed leads/wins only in 14 seats so far, a strike rate of 16%. In fact, the seat count Ajit Pawar’s party is headed towards is higher than the topper in the Maha Vikas Aghadi. In the MVA, the Shiv Sena-UBT has emerged as the most successful, with leads in 26 seats, followed by the Congress with leads in 17 seats.
While both NCPs stand third in their respective alliances, it’s a moment of validation for Ajit Pawar and one of decimation for Sharad Pawar. The latter’s party is currently leading in only 14 seats, the lowest strike rate of the Maratha strongman’s career.
Reacting to the election results, Ajit Pawar’s wife Sunetra Pawar said: “It is a very fortunate day for Ajit dada, NCP, for the public and Baramati. I thank the people of Baramati for extending their support to Ajit dada. This is the victory of the people of Baramati… I want the same (Ajit Pawar to be CM) as the public wants."
In his own election in Baramati, Ajit Pawar is leading by a comfortable margin over nephew Yugendra Pawar.
