Former US President Donald Trump, on the brink of reclaiming the White House, took a victory lap in Florida and gave a special shoutout to his vice-presidential running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio.

In his victory speech, Trump hailed what he described as the “next Vice President of the United States,” crediting Vance for his loyalty and resilience.

"JD has shown courage and conviction," Trump told a cheering crowd of supporters. "He’s the kind of fighter this country needs."

Vance, addressing the rally shortly after Trump, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be part of his historic campaign.

“Thank you, President Trump, for the trust that you placed in me,” Vance said to applause.

“We just witnessed the greatest political comeback in the history of this country, and under President Trump’s leadership, we’re never going to stop fighting for you, for your dreams, for the future of your children. We’re going to lead the greatest economic comeback in American history,” he said.

The 40-year-old Vance, a first-term senator from Ohio, has become known for his aggressive approach on the campaign trail, attacking the opposition with fervour. Since aligning with Trump, he solidified his reputation as an “attack dog” in the 2024 race, although his controversial views on immigration have drawn sharp criticism.

Vance faced backlash after doubling down on unproven claims regarding Haitian immigrants in Ohio eating pets, and defending past inflammatory remarks, including his criticism of “childless cat ladies,” a jab directed at Vice President Kamala Harris.
