Blue state Democrat governors are pledging to resist President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda if it conflicts with their state’s policies, governors of Illinois, California and New York indicated while reacting to the win of the Republican.
This has invited criticism from one key Trump transition team member who said Democrats are “out of touch" with their own voters.
“They should open their eyes and look at how the American people voted in this election," Trump-Vance transition spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt was quoted as saying by Fox News.
“They have given President Trump a resounding mandate to deliver on the promises that he made on the campaign trail. If you look at some of the bluest states in this country, New York and California, for example, those were some of the states with the largest shifts towards President Trump," she further added.
Leavitt’s statements come after a series of statements were made by Democrat governors Kathy Hochul (New York), Gavin Newsom (California) and JB Pritzker (Illinois).
While Newsom had said he is on a quest to “Trump-proof" the state, Pritzker said: “You come for my people, you come through me".
Kathy Hochul said she’d fight if rights of New Yorkers are restricted.
“I will work with him or anybody, regardless of party, on… efforts that I know will benefit the State of New York. However, if you try to harm New Yorkers or roll back their rights, I will fight you every step of the way," said while reacting to Donald Trump’s win.
Leavitt said there has been a huge shift towards Donald Trump in areas considered once ‘liberal’.
“If you look at liberal California, there was a 12-point shift towards President Trump. The American people are done with these far progressive policies. They want common sense, and that’s what President Trump has campaigned on," she said.
