Congress leader Rahul Gandhi met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday and urged him to expunge the unparliamentary words used against Rahul and his mother, Sonia, by BJP MPs during the ongoing winter session.
During his meeting amid the Centre-Opposition stand-off in Parliament, Rahul asked the speaker to expunge unparliamentary words, especially those from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey’s statement in the House regarding him.
The Speaker has asked the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition to write to him, mentioning the words that he felt were derogatory.
Rahul said that BJP leaders would keep bringing in allegations against the Opposition, but he and his allies only wanted the House to function.
“I held a meeting with the Speaker. I told him that derogatory comments against me should be expunged. The Speaker said that he would look into it. Our aim is that the House must run and discussion should happen in the House. No matter what they say about me, we want that there should be a debate on 13th December," he told reporters.
Parliament has seen little business this season amid repeated adjournments and is to end on December 20 ahead of the year-end holidays. The Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned until 2 pm on Wednesday following a disruption by the Opposition.
Earlier, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi raised concerns about the situation in Manipur, stating that the people are suffering, essential services are on the brink of collapse, and the impact on ordinary citizens is devastating.
Gogoi questioned when Prime Minister Narendra Modi would visit Manipur and urged Home Minister Amit Shah to update the House on the actions being taken to address the crisis. He also accused the BJP of bringing up George Soros’ name to deflect attention from the government’s failure.
Amid the commotion, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal asserted that the government was taking the necessary steps to address the situation in Manipur.
He claimed there was a nexus between Congress and external forces, which he argued was causing problems and contributing to the suffering of the nation. Goyal also suggested ties between Congress and George Soros, asking, “Why does George Soros have such a close relationship with their leader?"
Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day following a confrontation between the BJP-led central government and the opposition over a no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. The House will reconvene on December 12. On Tuesday, the Opposition INDIA bloc submitted a no-confidence motion against Dhankhar to the Secretary General of the Upper House.
