Besides Gandhi, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Ajay Maken and Akhilesh Prasad Singh are likely to feature in the party list which will be out this week.

Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi is likely to be the party’s candidate for Rajya Sabha elections from Rajasthan, putting an end to her 25 years of Lok Sabha journey, top Congress sources said on Monday.

Besides Gandhi, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Ajay Maken and Akhilesh Prasad Singh are likely to feature in the party list which will be out this week.

77-year-old Gandhi was first elected to Lok Sabha in 1999 from Congress bastion Rae Bareli. Since then, she has been winning from the seat. Rae Bareli’s neighbouring Lok Sabha seat Amethi, which was once a Congress stronghold and represented by Rahul Gandhi from 2004, was bagged by the BJP in 2019 when Smriti Irani took on the Gandhi scion.

Senior Congress leaders have earlier offered their Rajya Sabha seats in Telangana and Himachal Pradesh to Sonia Gandhi.

The Election Commission (EC) has announced elections for 56 Rajya Sabha seats on February 27. Among the states from which the Congress can comfortably send Gandhi are Telangana, where it is in power and has three seats in its quota, Himachal Pradesh (1), Bihar (6) and Rajasthan (6).

Sonia Gandhi’s entry into the Rajya Sabha could mean the political debut of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. While some speculate that Priyanka may also enter the Rajya Sabha, sources close to her say she wants a fight by nature and doesn’t want to debut with a comfortable battle. In case Priyanka plans to contest the Lok Sabha polls, with Sonia Gandhi in the Rajya Sabha, the Rae Bareilly will be vacant for her.
