When the local body authorities expressed their need to find a solution to clean clogged drains, students of the electronics and robotics department of the college came up with ‘Tunnel-Rat’, under their ‘Impact Lab’ initiative.

The ‘Tunnel-Rat’ is a gutter cleaning robot that can monitor obstacles in drains, collect and bring it out from the drain hole.

“Through remote control, we can send the robot inside the drain. It has an arm which can be used to grab the blocked waste and bring it outside. It is not a prototype, but a working Bot which can be used directly. We have demonstrated the working to the local body members,” said electronics department head Deepa Elizabeth.

The college handed over the Bot to the panchayat officials . UBA scheme is aimed at encouraging higher education institutions to work with villages by adopting them and helping them address their problems .

Under the scheme, the participating institute choses local bodies and interacts with villagers and works on the field. They must adopt five villages in consultation with the district collectors for the development activities under the UBA.

“We had a series of discussions with the panchayat officials and department heads. Based on the discussions, we had submitted five proposals, of which three have been sanctioned,” said Deepa Elizabeth.
