Several Walmart workers have put forward alternative theories regarding the tragic death of Gursimran Kaur, a 19-year-old Indian-origin employee whose charred remains were discovered in a walk-in oven at one of the supermarket chain’s outlets in Canada on October 19.

Users on TikTok with experience at Walmart or those currently working for the chain have commented on the mechanics of the walk-in oven, suggesting that it would be nearly impossible to accidentally get trapped inside, Hindustan Times reported.

A user named Chris Breezie demonstrated how the oven operates, noting that it is controlled from the outside and requires significant effort to close.

Breezie explained that the oven door is heavy and requires considerable strength to secure it. “I don’t even know if I would fit in here. I’m 5 foot 1, medium built. I would have to crouch down to get in,” she noted, emphasising that no employee is expected to enter the oven for cleaning purposes.

While she concluded that it would be hard for someone to lock themselves inside, she did not dismiss the idea that Gursimran could have been pushed into the oven. “Now, somebody could throw me in there and lock me in there, but that’s a whole different scenario,” she added.

Another Walmart employee voiced similar sentiments, stating that it’s impossible to lock oneself inside the oven. In a TikTok video, she even showed how to enter the oven and use an emergency release mechanism that allows for an easy exit.

“I’m not trying to theorise or form a conspiracy, it’s just hard to wrap my head around it when Walmart’s bakery ovens are so safe to use,” she noted.

Gursimran Kaur worked at a Walmart store in Halifax, Canada, alongside her mother. Both had been employed there for two years prior to the tragic incident. The family relocated to Canada from India nearly three years ago, while Gursimran’s father and brother remain in India. The Sikh Society is currently assisting the family in their efforts to immigrate “as soon as possible.”

A Walmart spokesperson informed Fortune that the store where Gursimran worked has been temporarily closed while management fully cooperates with the ongoing investigation.
