In China, a woman turned off her husband’s life support in a hospital as revenge for his infidelity. The man had been living with his mistress while still legally married to his wife.

The 38-year-old man from Liaoning province suffered a cerebral hemorrhage—a type of stroke causing bleeding in the brain—at his lover’s home and was taken to the hospital for emergency treatment, according to the South China Morning Post.

Upon his admission to the intensive care unit, doctors sought the mistress’s consent for surgery but found she had left the hospital. Another woman arrived and claimed to be the man’s wife.

The doctor informed the woman that her husband’s condition was critical. He was in a coma with a very low chance of surviving surgery. Additionally, the medical equipment could only temporarily sustain him, and the cost of the operation was exceedingly high, the publication reported.

The wife, who had known about her husband’s long-term infidelity and lack of emotional or financial support, expressed that she had not loved him for some time. She refused to sign the consent form, instead instructing doctors to remove the life-supporting tracheal tube and cease efforts to revive him.

The publication, however, did not report on the opinions or involvement of other relatives regarding the decision.

According to Chinese law, when a patient is incapacitated, doctors must explain the risks of surgery to close relatives and obtain their consent. If family members cannot agree on treatment, medical measures can be implemented with the approval of the head of the medical institution.
