Kamala Harris will be president for all Americans: How US reacted to debate

US Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate, Kamala Harris and her Republican rival Donald Trump battled fiercely over key issues, including the economy, abortion rights, illegal immigration and the Israel-Hamas war, among others, during their first-ever presidential debate in Philadelphia on Tuesday night. The two contenders left no stone unturned to accuse each of also being weak and lying to the people.

The much-anticipated debate concluded with Harris saying that she was focused on the future, while Trump painted a grim picture of the US as ''a failing nation".

In a post on Truth Social shortly after the debate, Trump said he thought that it was his best ever.

Here is how some of the most popular faces from the two rival parties reacted to the much-anticipated debate:

TIM WALZ

Kamala Harris's running mate Tim Walz said the Vice President showed her "vision" during the 90-minute debate. Walz said he "could not be prouder" to be in the 2024 White House race with her.

In another tweet, he said Harris "is used to taking on predators, fraudsters, and corporate stooges. Come to think of it — tonight’s debate is no different".

BARACK OBAMA

On his part, former US President Barack Obama, who endorsed Harris for president in July, said she "will be a president for all Americans".

"Tonight, we saw firsthand who has the vision and strength to move this country forward instead of dividing us. Kamala Harris
will be a president for all Americans. Let's get to work," he tweeted.

MICHELLE OBAMA

Former US First Lady Michelle Obama said Harris is the "only candidate in this race who is ready to be President".

"After tonight’s debate there should be no doubt – no room for discussion – Kamala Harris is the only candidate in this race who is ready to be President.

"I am once again urging everyone to roll up their sleeves and DO SOMETHING – phone bank, knock on doors, talk to any and everyone you know and urge them to vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Every vote will matter in what will be a close race. We cannot afford to have anyone sitting on the sidelines. There’s simply too much at stake."

HILLARY CLINTON

Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton reiterated the "need to defeat Donald Trump", her rival in the 2016 race to the White House.

"Here's what I know. We need to defeat Donald Trump. We need to elect Kamala Harris. If you've been waiting to join this fight, the time is now," she tweeted.

TAYLOR SWIFT

Merely moments after the debate ended, pop star Taylor Swift endorsed Harris on Instagram and called the latter a ''gifted leader".

JD VANCE

Donald Trump's running mate, JD Vance slammed Harris and said her "incompetence will lead us into World War 3".

"President Trump is right: what's in our best interest is for the killing to stop. Kamala Harris's incompetence will lead us into World War 3," he said.

VIVEK RAMASWAMY

Former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy told the media before the debate that "you may or may not agree with Trump's policies, but at least he has told you what he believes in... But we have heard nothing from Kamala Harris on her policies".

DONALD TRUMP JR

Donald Trump Jr., the former President's son, tweeted that Harris is the "biggest fraud to ever run for President".
