In a tragic incident, a Chinese man lost one of his eyes due to an infection caused by an insect that sat on his face. The man killed the fly that landed on him causing the infection to spread.

According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), soon after he killed that fly, the man’s left eye turned red, swollen, and painful. He then consulted a doctor who prescribed medication but despite everything, his condition worsened.

Despite the medical attention, the infection didn’t subside and he eventually had to have his left eyeball removed.

The man, identified as Wu, lives in Shenzhen in the southern province of Guangdong, China and was diagnosed with seasonal conjunctivitis.

After experiencing pain in his left eye, he took medication, but to no avail, and he started having problems seeing. Doctors informed him that his symptoms were caused by an infection that medication could no longer stop, as the eye and the surrounding areas had become severely ulcerated.

The infection was threatening to spread to his brain, so the doctors had to remove his entire left eyeball.

The insect involved was a drain fly, commonly found in dark, damp places in homes, such as bathrooms, bathtubs, sinks, and kitchens.

Wu’s case garnered the attention of social media users on the Chinese platform Weibo.

“This is terrifying. I often see these small insects in my bathroom and will no longer kill them randomly,” one user commented.

“Always keeping the bathroom and kitchen clean is the best way to protect ourselves,” commented another.

In a similar incident in 2018, a 97-year-old woman in China experienced severe pain in her left cheek due to a fly landing on a wound, causing a secondary infection. Her family said the bathroom had not been cleaned for a long time, attracting many drain flies to the surfaces.
