This framework, developed by the Ministry of Education, is used to rank higher education institutions in India. Every year, it publishes a list of the best institutions in a variety of fields, including engineering, science, medical, law, management and others.
This year, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has secured an overall rank of 3 in the country, preceded by IIT Madras and IISc Bengaluru.
In comparison to the NIRF 2023 rankings, IIT Bombay has gone up by one place, from rank 4 in 2023 to rank 3 in 2024.
How IIT Bombay fared across NIRF 2024 ranking categories
While securing rank 3 in the overall NIRF 2024 rankings, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay also finds mention in a number of other categories.
It is ranked 4th among Research Institutions, highlighting its significant contributions to academic research and innovation. Furthermore, the institution has maintained a top-tier position in the Engineering ranking, currently ranked third, reflecting its excellence in engineering education and practice.

In the NIRF 2024 rankings, IIT Bombay has achieved notable scores across various ranking parameters. Here’s a look at the different segments where IIT Bombay has scored high including teacher resources, placements, research and more.
TLR: The institution scored 83.85 out of 100 in this parameter, highlighting its robust infrastructure, faculty quality, and student-teacher ratio.
Research and Professional Practices (RPC): In this parameter, IIT Bombay earned a score of 82.35, demonstrating its strong research output and contributions through publications and patents.
Graduation Outcomes (GO): This parameter measures placement records, higher studies, and employment statistics, IIT Bombay received a score of 83.36, indicating its effective support for student career advancement. According to the institute's data for the NIRF 2024 ranking, student engagement and placement increased significantly between 2020 and 2023.
In the 2020-21 academic year, a total of 663 students graduated within the minimum stipulated time, with 500 of them securing placements. The median annual salary for these placed graduates was Rs 13,92,000. Additionally, 163 students from this batch were selected for higher studies.
In the 2021-22 academic year, 674 students graduated on time, and 591 of them were placed. The median salary for these graduates was Rs 18,80,000, and 83 students opted for higher education.
For the 2022-23 academic year, 798 students graduated as scheduled, with 644 securing placements. The median salary for the placed graduates was Rs 19,63,000, and 154 students were selected for further studies.
