Samsung is expected to bring an affordable version of its Z Fold model to attract more people to the foldable segment.

Samsung is reportedly gearing up to launch a new budget-friendly foldable smartphone. As per a report from Korean media outlet Sisa Journal, the entry-level foldable device from Samsung will pack with a slightly less powerful processor, an inferior display and a smaller battery capacity. These compromises will enable the consumer tech hardware giants to keep the pricing of the rumoured foldable device in check.

The camera specifications, however, will be similar to their current existing foldable lineup which should translate to near-flagship grade photographs in theory despite the difference in processing power. The cost of the rumoured foldable smartphone is expected to be around $800 (Rs 66,000 approx) which is much more affordable than the $1800 or Rs 1.49 lakh for the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

Following the Mobile World Congress 2024 (MWC 2024) in Barcelona, there were several rumours surrounding the making of Samsung’s latest Z Fold lineup. Now, speculations are being made that the Korean tech company will be making a Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra for its premium users while also adding a budget offering for the average consumer. The tech giants are supposedly going to announce their 2024 foldable lineup in July this year.

Samsung has been leading the race in the foldable smartphone market since the release of the first Z fold device back in September 2019. The first generation of this smartphone lineup received mixed reviews from consumers, especially for the very noticeable crease going right down the centre of the screen.

Minor tweaks and tunings over the last few years have helped Samsung deliver a much more mature product in the form of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. However, in recent years, Samsung’s foldable lineup has stagnated. This has cost them a huge market share in China due to competition from Honor and Huawei. A cheaper Z Fold 6 could help them regain much of that lost market by potentially reaching millions of new users.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 launched last year and featured a ton of flagship-grade features. It was released with industry-leading 6.20-inch cover and 7.60-inch foldable screens. The resolution of the display is 2176×1812 which offers a pixel density of 374 ppi.

At the heart, the Z Fold 5 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 alongside 12GB RAM. The foldable device packs a 4400mAh battery that also supports proprietary fast charging. In terms of the cameras, the Z Fold 5 packs a triple-lens setup that features a 50MP primary, a 10MP telephoto lens and a 12MP ultrawide sensor. The front camera houses a 10MP+4MP dual-lens setup. The latest Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is selling the market for Rs 1,54,999 after its launch.
