Protesters stole chairs, tables, livestock and feasted on food that was found in Ganabandhu, the Bangladesh prime minister’s official residence.

Protesters who stormed Ganabhaban, Bangladesh Prime Minister’s official residence in Dhaka, shortly after Sheikh Hasina fled the country following protests were spotted looting furniture, domesticated animals, livestock, fish and food items.

Photos shared on social media showed people fleeing with rabbits, fish, chicken and even goats taken from Ganabhaban in Dhaka. A man was pictured sitting on a rickshaw with a German Shepherd pup, while a young protester was seen sleeping on the bed of one of the rooms of Hasina’s official residence.

Some protesters even captured themselves feasting on biryani and korma inside the prime minister’s official residence. The videos and pictures have gone viral on social media.

Prothom Alo said that protesters stole coconuts from the garden area of the official residence and even stole sarees, bed sheets, pillow covers and other precious items.

However, irate protesters also vandalised the premises.

Protesters, who accuse Hasina’s Awami League and Awami Jubo League (its student wing), of attacking protesters along with the police razed and defaced statues of Bangladesh founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Awami League party offices were set on fire and many Awami League members faced the wrath of irate mobs. Some Awami League members were also previously seen attacking protesters.

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule ended on Monday as she fled more than a month of deadly protests and the military announced it would form an interim government.

Hasina had sought to quell nationwide protests against her government since early July but she fled the country after brutal unrest on Sunday in which nearly 100 people were killed.

At least 56 people were killed Monday during violence, mainly in Dhaka but also in other cities, police said, saying gangs had launched revenge attacks on Hasina’s allies.

At least 94 people were killed on Sunday, the deadliest day of the unrest, with protesters and government supporters battling each other with sticks and knives, and security forces opening fire.

The latest violence took the total number of people killed since protests began in early July to at least 356, according to an AFP tally based on police, government officials and doctors at hospitals.
