A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Northern Molucca Sea in eastern Indonesia on April 2, triggering widespread panic and a brief tsunami warning across the region. One person died following the outbreak of the tremor.

The earthquake occurred at approximately 7:48 am local time, with its epicentre located about 127 kilometres (79 miles) north-west of the city of Ternate. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the tremor struck at a relatively shallow depth of 35 kilometres.
