US President Donald Trump has weighed in on the victory of Indian-origin socialist Zohran Mamdani in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary election, calling him a “100 per cent communist lunatic" and accused the Democratic Party of having “crossed the line."
In a post on Truth Social, the US President hit out at the leaders supporting the 33-year-old democratic socialist, including Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and Senator Chuck Schumer, after former New York governor Andrew Cuomo conceded the election.
“It’s finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line. Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor. We’ve had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous," Trump said.
In a personal attack on Mamdani, Trump said, ““He looks terrible, his voice is annoying, he’s not very smart, and he’s backed by AOC and others who I call ‘Dummies’."
He also mocked Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, calling him “Cryin’ Chuck" for supporting Mamdani. “Even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, is groveling over him. Yes, this is a big moment in the History of our Country!" Trump said in the post.
In another post, Trump suggested Democrats should nominate Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett for President and give Cabinet roles to “AOC+3." He added, “With Mamdani as our future Communist Mayor, the country is really screwed."
The son of Indian‑born filmmaker Mira Nair and Indian‑Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani, Zohran Mamdani declared victory Tuesday night after Andrew Cuomo conceded. With 93 per cent of the votes counted, Mamdani led with 43.5 per cent, while Cuomo trailed at 36.4 per cent. Cuomo praised Mamdani’s campaign, calling it “smart, good, and impactful."
If Mamdani wins the final race, he will become New York’s first Muslim mayor.
The son of Indian-origin immigrants, he is backed by the Democratic Socialists of America party — the kind of niche, leftist affiliation that many Democratic leaders believe their party needs to shed. His win has deepened divisions within the Democratic Party, with two union leaders stepping down from the party’s leadership board.
Mamdani has represented Astoria, Queens, in the New York State Assembly since 2021. His mayoral platform includes plans for city-run grocery stores, free buses, and rent freezes—all to be funded by a proposed $10 billion tax increase on wealthy residents and corporations.
Who Is Zohran Mamdani?
Zohran Kwame Mamdani is the son of Indian-origin immigrant parents: his mother is the Padma Bhushan awardee Mira Nair, who has Punjabi roots from Delhi and grew up in Odisha; while his father is the academic Mahmood Mamdani, who is Ugandan and traces his roots to Gujarat.
Mamdani, who took New York City by storm with his campaign and an enthusiastic endorsement from another internet favourite, Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, was declared victorious in the Democratic mayoral primary late on Tuesday (June 24).
“In the words of Nelson Mandela: it always seems impossible until it’s done. My friends, it is done. And you are the ones who did it. I am honoured to be your Democratic nominee for the Mayor of New York City," Mamdani said in a post on X.
Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, on October 18, 1991, and raised in New York City. He moved to New York with his parents when he was seven. His mother Mira Nair has won applause for films like ‘Monsoon Wedding’ and ‘Salaam Bombay!’.
