Iran has launched its first salvo of ballistic missiles at Israel after the US military conducted airstrikes at three key Iranian nuclear facilities in the early hours of Sunday, marking a dramatic escalation in the West Asian conflict.

Iran’s state media said more than 30 ballistic missiles had been fired as sirens rang across parts of Israel, while explosions were heard in Jerusalem. The Israeli Army said it was working to intercept missiles from Iran. Israel had closed its airspace after the US strikes on Iran.

Iran’s armed forces said Sunday they targeted multiple sites in Israel including Ben Gurion airport, using a combination of long-range liquid and solid fuel missiles with devastating warhead power". The targets included the airport, a “biological research centre", logistics bases and various layers of command and control centres, it added.

At least 16 people were wounded in the latest Iranian ballistic missile barrage to Israel, which caused “large-scale destruction" according to Israel’s emergency service, Magen David Adom (MDA). A ballistic missile launched from Iran struck the city of Haifa, despite no sirens sounding there, according to The Times of Israel. Loud booms were heard across Israel, and medics was en route to several areas with reported crashes.

Civilians have been asked to remain in bomb shelters until further notice, as security forces responded to reports of ballistic missile impacts in central and northern Israel. This came shortly after Iran’s top diplomat warned of “everlasting consequences" to the US attacks.

“A short while ago, sirens sounded in several areas across Israel following the identification of missiles launched from Iran toward the State of Israel," the Israeli military said in a statement. “At this time, the (Israeli Air Force) is operating to intercept and strike where necessary to eliminate the threat."

Tensions dramatically escalated after US President Donald Trump said that the American military carried out strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites and that Tehran “must now agree to end this war", after days of speculation over whether the United States would join its ally Israel’s bombing campaign.

“We have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran," including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan, Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform. “A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site."

He said Iran’s three main nuclear enrichment facilities had been “completely and totally obliterated", and hailed the strikes as a “spectacular military success." He warned of further strikes in Iran if the country did not make peace.

Israel raised its alert level after the strikes, permitting only essential activities until further notice, the military announced, while closing its airspace.
