As Myanmar reels from the aftermath of a devastating earthquake, the Indian Air Force delivered replenishment supplies and food aid for needy communities on Sunday, while the field hospital set up by the Indian Army under ‘Operation Brahma‘ has successfully treated 800 patients so far.

Sharing a post on X, the Indian embassy in Myanmar shared the update on India’s humanitarian efforts in the affected region: “Our Field Hospital has been widely appreciated in Myanmar with 800 patients so far. Sr. Gen. Min Aung Hlaing visited it today."

An Indian Air Force C-17 Globemaster aircraft carried 31 tonnes of humanitarian aid, including food supplies for needy communities and replenishment stores for the field hospital. On Saturday, India had delivered 442 tonnes of food aid to Myanmar, as part of its ongoing humanitarian response to the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck the country last month.

The consignment, comprising rice, cooking oil, noodles and biscuits, was transported aboard the Indian Navy’s landing ship tank INS Gharial and handed over at Thilawa Port by Ambassador Abhay Thakur to Yangon Chief Minister U Soe Thein and his team.

Death Toll Crosses 3,400

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake jolted Myanmar on March 28, killing thousands of people in the civil war-torn country. According to Xinhua news agency, the death toll has risen to 3,455, while 4,840 people were injured and 214 are missing.

The disaster also affected Thailand, with tremors felt in China and Vietnam. India mounted its relief mission named ‘Operation Brahma’ as a swift response to the devastation caused by the earthquake.

The hospital unit comprising 118 personnel was deployed in Myanmar using two C-17 heavy-lift aircraft of the IAF which had taken off from Agra on March 29. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke to Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and promised to extend support to deal with the disaster.

The two leaders also met at the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok earlier this month, where PM Modi again extended his condolences over the loss of lives in the Myanmar earthquake. “India is doing whatever is possible to assist our sisters and brothers of Myanmar in this critical time," PM Modi mentioned.

Later, the Quad partners, including the governments of India, Australia, Japan, and the United States, issued a joint statement on the Myanmar Earthquake Response. “We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the peoples of Myanmar and Thailand following the earthquake that struck central Myanmar on March 28, 2025," an official statement read.
