FORT MYERS, Fla. — Alex Bregman and the Boston Red Sox finalized a three-year, $120 million contract on Saturday.

Bregman receives a $5 million signing bonus, a $35 million salary this season, and $40 million in each of the following two years, with some deferred payments. He can opt out after the 2025 and 2026 seasons to re-enter free agency.

With Boston, Bregman is expected to move from third base to second, as All-Star slugger Rafael Devers holds the hot corner.

Teammates Excited About Bregman’s Arrival

“A huge addition,” said shortstop Trevor Story, who signed with the Red Sox three years ago after considering the Houston Astros.

“I’ve known Alex. We’ve gotten close over the last few years. It’s cool because he was recruiting me to Houston, and now the roles have reversed—I was recruiting him hard to come here. It’s great we got it done.”

Bregman took batting practice, fielded grounders, and signed autographs on Saturday. The Red Sox will formally introduce him at a Sunday news conference.

Red Sox Roster Move to Accommodate Bregman

Boston placed left-hander Patrick Sandoval on the 60-day injured list to open a roster spot. Sandoval is recovering from internal-brace surgery on his UCL, which he underwent last June.

Bregman’s Career Highlights & Recent Performance

The 30-year-old Bregman, a two-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion, spent nine seasons with the Houston Astros. He is coming off one of his least productive offensive years, hitting .260 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs in the final year of a $100 million, five-year contract. He also won his first Gold Glove last season.

Bregman ranks sixth in MLB history with 19 postseason home runs. The Astros selected him second overall in the 2015 amateur draft, and he debuted in the majors a year later.

His career-best seasons came in 2018 and 2019. He finished fifth in AL MVP voting in 2018 after hitting .286 with 31 homers, 103 RBIs, and an MLB-leading 51 doubles. The following year, he placed second in MVP voting behind Mike Trout, setting career highs with a .296 average, 41 home runs, 112 RBIs, and 119 walks.

Bregman’s walk rate declined last season, drawing just 44 walks with a 23.6% chase rate, his highest since 2017.

Overall, Bregman has a .272 career batting average, 191 home runs, and 663 RBIs across nine seasons.
