Social activist Anna Hazare has announced that he will begin an indefinite hunger strike on January 30 in Maharashtra’s Ralegan Siddhi, accusing the state government of failing to implement the long-pending Lokayukta Act. Calling this his “final agitation," Hazare said the law is crucial for public welfare but continues to be ignored despite repeated assurances.

Hazare had earlier gone on a hunger strike in Ralegan Siddhi in 2022, demanding the enactment of the Lokayukta law. That protest was withdrawn after mediation by then chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and the Union agriculture minister, following which a committee drafted the legislation. The Bill was passed by both Houses of the Maharashtra legislature and later forwarded to the President for assent.

However, Hazare now says the Act has still not been implemented on the ground. He added that he has written seven letters to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, but has received no response.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Hazare expressed frustration over the government’s silence.

“This law is very important for the welfare of the people. I wrote seven letters, yet no response came. I don’t understand why the government is not implementing it. A government is meant for public welfare, not for mere display," he said, confirming his January 30 fast.

Hazare, known for galvanising the nation during the 2011 India Against Corruption movement at Jantar Mantar, said he hopes the government will act before the situation escalates again.
