The Supreme Court on Friday initiated an in-house inquiry into Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Varma after a huge pile of unaccounted cash was recovered from his official residence.
The apex court has also sought a report from Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya.
Amid the ongoing probe into the matter, the Rajya Sabha also on Friday addressed the alleged recovery of cash from the residence of a sitting judge of the Delhi High Court. While Congress urged Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to instruct the government to propose measures to increase the judicial accountability, the Vice President promised to find a way to hold a structured discussion on the matter.
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh brought up the issue in the Upper House of Parliament, seeking the Chair’s stance on judicial accountability and reminding him about a pending impeachment notice for a judge of the Allahabad High Court.
“This morning, we learned about a shocking case involving a large amount of cash found at the residence of a judge of the Delhi High Court," Ramesh said.
Ramesh emphasised that the chairman had consistently highlighted the need for judicial accountability and urged Dhankhar to instruct the government to propose measures for enhancing it.
Dhankhar On Cash Recovery From Delhi HC Judge’s Residence
On the issue related to the alleged recovery of the cash, Dhankhar said what “bothers" him is that the incident happened but did not come to light immediately. He expressed concern over the delayed revelation of the incident, stating that if it had involved a politician, bureaucrat, or industrialist, the concerned person would have been immediately targeted. He assured that a transparent, accountable, and effective systemic response would follow.
The chairman also committed to consulting with the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition to arrange a structured discussion during the session.
SC Collegium Acts Against Justice Varma
The Supreme Court Collegium in an emergency meeting on Thursday decided that Justice Yashwant Varma will be transferred – from the Delhi High Court back to Allahabad.
The Collegium’s decision reportedly came after a large amount of unaccounted cash was found in his official bungalow last week. The money was recovered from the official bungalow of Justice Yashwant Varma after a fire broke out at his residence on Tughlak Road.
