Asim Munir’s continued war rhetoric appears to be part of a strategy to consolidate the Pakistan Army’s control over Balochistan, according to top intelligence sources.
Field Marshal Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), has vowed to take decisive action against any territorial violation, whether “direct or indirect."
Munir claimed that Pakistan’s security forces would thwart “inimical designs" by Indian-sponsored proxies operating in Balochistan. He also warned that these forces would crush all Indian proxies, which, he argues, continue to “propagate violence and disrupt development" in the region.
Speaking to CNN-News18, sources said that Munir’s statements are framed as part of the Pakistan Army’s broader narrative to protect national security and maintain control over Balochistan, a province with long-standing unrest and separatist movements.
The sources added that Munir’s frequent references to Indian involvement in Balochistan are aimed at strengthening the army’s internal control over the province. His repeated anti-India rhetoric is seen as a way to deflect attention from the Pakistan Army’s domestic challenges.
Sources also suggest that the Pakistan Army’s focus on Indian proxies serves to shift attention away from its own struggles in the region. The military’s messaging appears to be targeting a domestic audience, with the aim of maintaining the army’s legitimacy amid mounting internal pressure. Despite claims of development in Balochistan, the region continues to face significant unrest, and the army’s control is increasingly questioned.
The focus on the India threat narrative comes as the Pakistan Army seeks to cover up atrocities in Balochistan, where development efforts have stalled.
