Assam BJP Altercation: A purported video of Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia scolding state cabinet minister Jayanta Malla Baruah in front of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has gained widespread attention, with the opposition Congress mocking the ruling party.
The incident took place at Bahjani in Nalbari district during inauguration of the new Mandal office by Sarma on Sunday.
In the viral video clip, Saikia can be seen scolding Baruah, who is the MLA from Nalbari constituency. He also reportedly instructed local party officials to remove the mandal president from the scene. Sarma can be seen standing next to Baruah, while Saikia looked agitated.
It was however difficult to hear what Saikia was shouting about, but he was allegedly seen pointing fingers at Baruah and saying, "your constituency… disrespect to the president" in front of Sarma and others.
Then Sarma and others moved from the place and entered a room in the office complex.
According to a party leader, Saikia was upset at not being able to enter the venue while the CM, Baruah and the mandal president were inside and asked Baruah how this could happen in his constituency.
“This was not a government programme, but a party event. The state party chief should get the prime importance. I think the state president felt that he was not given the due respect, and that is why this incident happened," he told news agency PTI.
Congress Jibes At Ruling BJP
Assam Congress president Bhupen Borah called the altercation a display of the cracks between “RSS-loyalists" in the BJP and the “new guard" of the party.
“Ram Ram, rebellion on 1st Bohag (the first month of Assamese new year)… SANGHI RAJ vs SYNDICATE RAJ… I always knew that, in BJP Assam, the Syndicate Sardars are facing a fightback from the RSS-loyalists, but unfortunately the Godi Media is too afraid to show it," he said in a post on X.

“In any case: just see how the CM who likes to show his courage and manliness by locking up ordinary people, journalists and Congress spokesmen, demurred in front of the BJP State President @DilipSaikia4Bjp," he added.
Tagging the CM, the state Congress president said, “It was nice to see you lose your voice." He (Sarma) always considered his chair more important than his self-respect and it is the latest evidence, Borah alleged.
Saikia, who is also the Darrang-Udalguri MP, was made the state BJP president earlier this year and has grown within the RSS and the BJP for nearly four decades. On the other hand, many of the BJP’s most prominent faces in the state – including Sarma and Baruah – are relatively recent imports into the party in the last decade – both from the Congress.
