The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is gearing up to launch a massive padayatra (foot march) across Jharkhand, focusing on issues such as Bangladeshi infiltration, religious conversions, and the declining tribal population. The party aims to use the yatra as a platform to raise awareness and mobilise public opinion around these key concerns.

Spanning over three years, the yatra will be conducted in phased intervals, covering every tehsil of the state. It will be held three to four days each week, reaching deep into rural and tribal regions.

Leading the march will be senior BJP leader and Godda MP Nishikant Dubey, alongside prominent state leaders including Champai Soren and Babulal Marandi.

Joining the campaign will be Mandal Murmu, a descendant of revered tribal freedom fighters Sidho-Kanho, who recently joined the BJP during the assembly elections.

The BJP has been vocal about what it calls a rising number of illegal migrants entering Jharkhand with the tacit support of the current state government—an issue it highlighted during the last state elections, which the party lost to Hemant Soren. During his campaign in 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had focused on three pillars— roti (livelihood), beti (daughters), and maati (land)—to emphasise the challenges facing tribal communities. He underlined the lack of employment opportunities, the erosion of tribal identity due to demographic shifts caused by illegal infiltration, and the state government’s inaction on the issue.

The Modi government, meanwhile, has underscored its commitment to tribal welfare through multiple initiatives in states like Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. One major highlight is the annual celebration of Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas, with the Prime Minister referring to him as Bhagwan Birsa Munda to honor his legacy.

The elevation of Droupadi Murmu, a tribal woman, to the presidency has also been cited by the BJP as a symbol of empowerment for tribal women under its administration.

Through this yatra, the BJP hopes to connect with grassroots communities and send a strong political message: that Jharkhand needs a government committed to protecting tribal interests, combating infiltration, and dismantling what it calls the “mafia raj" under a leadership that recently saw its Chief Minister jailed on corruption charges.
