A former Bangladeshi minister has alleged a nexus between current interim leader Muhammad Yunus and powerful families in the United States – Bidens, Clintons and Soroses – in bringing down the Sheikh Hasina government last year.
Former Bangladesh minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, in an interview to Russia Today earlier this week, explained the “money maze" routed through NGOs – he gave USAID and Republican Institute as examples – that helped to fund the anti-government protests that eventually led to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina.
Hasina, who fled Bangladesh on August 5, 2024, is now said to be living in exile in New Delhi even as her country faces fresh elections in the coming months.
Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury said Yunus has had ties with powerful families, especially the Clintons, for a long time. He said it was their “intention or assistance", in this case, that was given to the “rioteers".
“There were individuals who were in power, especially the Biden family, Clintons, Soroses; these families had a nexus with Muhammad Yunus. It was their intention, or their assistance that was given to the rioteers. But there were other issues as well," Chowdhury told Russia Today, which asked him what was it about the Hasina-led government that “rubbed the US the wrong way".
He said NGOs like USAID were running a campaign against the government, especially since 2018. They were used to pay activists and even extremists for a “carefully planned chaos that was turned into a big riot".
“…I should say there has been a nexus between the Clinton family and Yunus regime for a very long time and these activities were going on for a while. And they weren’t very open, hellbent on changing the government of Bangladesh especially after 2018," he said in a show titled ‘US’s Dirty Deeds Inside Bangladesh’. “$29 million came from two NGOs – where had that money gone? It was meant for regime change – rappers were being paid, cultural activists were paid, hijra community was being paid. Whilst the extremists, jihadi militants, were also being paid by those liberal elements…"
Chowdhury alleged the riot that ensued had elements of planned killings and assassinations with “trained rioteers and killers".
“A chaos was carefully planned with this money and then the chaos was turned into a big riot. In the riot, there were killings, assassinations using snipers; trained rioteers and killers were deployed. So it was a meticulous design," he said.
The USAID, which is the US government’s humanitarian and development agency, was recently shut down by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under Elon Musk’s leadership in July. Its foreign aid duties are now managed by the US State Department.
He recalled former US President Bill Clinton’s comment that Muhammad Yunus “should have long ago won the Nobel Prize".
In 2024, Yunus was invited to speak at the Clinton Global Initiative meeting, where Clinton welcomed him publicly. The former minister believes this relationship shows a deeper effort by the Clinton Foundation and Yunus to push for regime change in Bangladesh, using democracy and development as a cover.
Hasina has also accused Yunus of “selling the nation to the US" and said both she and her father rejected American attempts to take control of St Martin’s Island.
