The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday announced its first list of 47 candidates for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections. The list includes former Union ministers Rajeev Chandrasekhar and V Muraleedharan, who will contest from Nemom and Kazhakoottam seats, respectively.

Former Union minister George Kurian has been fielded from Kanjirappally. Other notable candidates include PC George from Poonjar, R Sreelekha from Vattiyoorkavu, and Padmaja Venugopal from Thrissur.

For reserved constituencies, Raji Prasad will contest from Kunnathur, R Rashmi from Kottarakkara, and Kavitha KS from Sulthanbathery. Sobha Surebdran and Navya Haridas will contest from Palakkad and Kozhikode North, respectively.

According to a press release, the BJP’s Central Election Committee finalised the candidates at a meeting on March 12, chaired by Nitin Nabin. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Minister Amit Shah, and other senior party leaders were present at the meeting.

Kerala’s assembly has 140 seats, where the main contest is traditionally between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF).

The BJP, as part of the Democratic Alliance (NDA), plans to contest around 100 seats, while its allies Bharat Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS) and Twenty20 are expected to contest the remaining 40 seats.

The Election Commission has scheduled the Kerala Assembly elections for a single day on April 9, with counting of votes to be held on May 4.

Voting in Assam and Puducherry will also take place on April 9, while Tamil Nadu goes to the polls on April 23. West Bengal will hold elections in two phases on April 23 and 29.
