Wildfires in Los Angeles have created havoc for both human beings and infrastructure. It is always an issue about how to handle these kinds of wildfires.
Evacuating during a wildfire is very difficult. Experts says people can significantly improve their own safety with a little preparation and common sense.
Here are some safety tips on what to do before and during a wildfire evacuation.
Preparation Before a Wildfire Strikes
Always create a wildfire action plan which is tailored to your household’s needs like escape routes, meeting points, and plans for pets, livestock, and individuals with special needs.
Always ready with Pack a "go bag" with essentials like prescriptions, important documents, food, water, and a first aid kit. Jesse Torres from Cal Fire advises, “Plan like you’re going on a trip for seven days.”
Stay Alert and Don’t Delay Evacuation
Sign up for regional alert systems to receive notifications via phone, email, or apps like FEMA’s real-time alert system.
Torres emphasizes, “The biggest thing is to get out early, before the notifications come out,” especially in areas with limited evacuation routes.
Protect Your Home If Time Permits
Close windows, doors, and vents to prevent embers from entering your home.
Shut off gas and power if it can be done safely, and fill tubs or garbage cans with water to assist firefighters.
During Evacuation
Stick to pre-planned routes. Avoid congested areas when possible.
Watch out for hazards like power lines, heavy traffic, and blowing debris.
What to Do If Trapped
Call 911 immediately and provide specific location details. If walking to safety, stay on main routes to increase the chances of being spotted by rescuers or passing cars.
