Senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan stirred controversy on Thursday with a sharp reaction to the acquittal of all seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. While speaking to reporters, Chavan alleged that the case was deliberately weakened and raised serious questions about the investigation under the BJP-led government.

“Someone definitely carried out the blast in Malegaon. I already knew this would be the outcome of the case because it was initiated during the UPA government, and later, the BJP came to power. The NIA weakened the case. Under whose leadership is the NIA working?" Chavan said.

He further questioned the lack of accountability in terror investigations: “The government should tell us if those acquitted didn’t carry out the blast, then who did? The same thing happened in the train blast case. What answer will you give to the families of those who lost their lives?"

Commenting on the terminology often used in such cases, Chavan said, “I request, don’t use the term ‘saffron terrorism’. If you must, then say ‘Sanatani terrorist’ or ‘Hindu terrorist’." However, he added a caveat, saying, “But in truth, terrorism has no caste or religion."

His remarks have triggered strong political reactions, with critics accusing him of communalising the issue, while supporters argue he was highlighting the inconsistencies and failures in the investigation process.

The blast took place on September 29, 2008, in Malegaon, Maharashtra, which killed six people and injured over a hundred. The trial of the case spanned over 17 years.
