A shark bit off both hands of a Canadian woman who attempted to take its picture off a Caribbean beach in the Turks and Caicos islands last week.

The woman was a few yards from the shore when the predator struck. Local authorities said she ‘attempted to engage’ with the animal in order to take its photo. The 55-year-old was in shallow waters when the predator struck, swimming only a few yards from the shore.

According to a report by Daily Mail, the woman’s husband tried to stop the shark from biting her again.

Shocking pictures show a crowd gathered around the injured woman after she reached the beach. People were holding clothes to her arms in a bid to stop the bleeding.

The woman reportedly lost one hand at the wrist and the other halfway down her forearm. She is now receiving medical treatment in Canada.

A man who said he was the woman’s relative claimed she managed to walk back to shore after the bite. He added that she was bitten on the thigh but did not lose her leg.

Meanwhile, witnesses said her husband desperately tried to fight off the shark as it circled and attempted to bite her again.

Police and environmental officials confirmed that the attack happened around 10:30 am on Friday, February 7, near Thompson’s Cove Beach in central Providenciales.

They advised people to stay out of the water until it was declared safe.
