ChatGPT is losing users at a fast pace to Claude AI

Claude outage might have made the headlines in the last 24 hours but Anthropic has some positive developments to be pleased about as well. The ChatGPT uninstalls have gathered pace during the same period, especially after OpenAI confirmed its plans to work with the Department of Defense (DoD) of the US government.

This is a big deal for Anthropic after all the recent criticisms publicly made by its chief Dario Amodei, who has refused to fully comply with the government terms and access of AI data for various purposes. Industry reports confirm the change in trends as people switch from ChatGPT to Claude and the numbers are staggering to say the least.

OpenAI’s DoD Deal: Who Really Wins?

The report from Sensor Tower claims the day-to-day uninstalls of ChatGPT have gone up by a whopping 295 percent. And at the same time, Claude AI is being used by more people with its installs increasing by up to 51 percent in the last few days of February this year.

Anthropic’s chief has been vehemently clear that Claude will not be used to spy on American citizens or used in autonomous weapons. He even pointed out that AI is not fully equipped to handle such tasks yet and is not sure if the government realises this situation.

In the meanwhile, OpenAI and Sam Altman have somewhat piggybacked on Claude shifting away from the government systems, and offered ChatGPT to do all the tasks that Amodei was not keen on signing up for.

Altman does claim the agreement with the DoD has been reached to deploy the AI models in classified networks. He even did an Ask-Me-Anything (AMA) on X to answer some of these concerns.

But people are not really pleased with how things have quickly changed hands, making ChatGPT less desirable to many because of these apprehensions.

That’s not all, Claude has quickly moved up the ladder and the no. 1 app on the App Store in the US, just a week after ranked 20 on the charts. All this overnight popularity seems to have come at some price for Anthropic which has seen Claude face multiple outages in the last 24 hours, with thousands reporting issues with the AI chatbot across platforms.
