Google is a pioneer in digital advertising and that has people worried about its plans to monetise AI chatbots in the near future.

OpenAI is bringing ads to ChatGPT soon and the company has more or less confirmed its intentions. But another big tech giant is very much in the line of action, especially because of its digital ads business earning billions over the years. Google’s Gemini is understandably being discussed widely and people are worried the company’s AI model could be next in line for a similar model.

However, Google has been quick to alleviate those concerns and its AI chief has done it publicly much to everyone’s relief.

Gemini Ads Next?

Google’s AI chief Demis Hassabis was quizzed about Gemini and the company’s broader plans to run the AI model over the next few years. He was also asked to talk about any plans to bring ads to Gemini. Hassabis, speaking in Davos at the World Economic Forum, confirmed that the company is not planning to bring ads in the AI chatbot anytime soon. “There are no plans to put ads inside Gemini,"

Google is a pioneer of the digital advertising sector so it was obviously going to become a concern when OpenAI decided to open the gates for ads which can easily become a trend that others follow.

However, Hassabis and Google seem to have a different idea about bringing ads to AI chatbots, where people have more personal conversations than doing a general search on the internet. “If you want a true universal assistant that people really trust and rely on, you have to be very thoughtful about how you monetise it," he was quoted saying at the event.

Desperate Times?

He was also asked about his views on Google’s rival taking the ads route this early for ChatGPT. “It’s interesting they’ve gone for that (ads) so early," he mentioned, and also took a slight dig at OpenAI by highlighting, “Maybe they feel the need to make more revenue."

There are many ways to look at increasing the revenue streams for these companies but OpenAI clearly has less wriggle room in this regard since it is an AI-centric company without any other product or services available to monetise. In comparison, Google can rely on multiple businesses, including Search to continue making the big bucks that can help fund the ever-evolving AI ecosystem for the company.

Microsoft is likely to be another major force in the space, and with Apple tipped to join hands with Google for its AI ambitions, the big stalwarts could once again become the major contenders, even though OpenAI has the first-mover advantage over all of the legacy brands.
