Shi Yongxin, the abbot of China’s renowned Shaolin Temple, is under investigation for embezzlement and sexual misconduct, state media reported on Sunday.

The temple’s official website posted a notice, quoted by China Daily, stating that Shi is suspected of criminal offences including misappropriating project funds and temple assets.

He is also accused of seriously violating Buddhist rules by having improper relationships with multiple women over a long period and fathering illegitimate children.

Shi is currently being investigated jointly by several authorities. The temple said it will update the public as the investigation progresses.

Founded in 495 AD, the Shaolin Temple is located in Henan province, at the foot of Song Mountain. It is famous as the birthplace of Zen Buddhism and Chinese kung fu. Its warrior monks have been known across Asia for centuries. Over the past 50 years, films and TV shows have spread its fame worldwide.

The temple attracts students and tourists from all over the world, drawn by its religious significance and its reputation as a centre for martial arts training.

Shi Yongxin, whose original name is Liu Yingcheng, has been a controversial figure. He entered the temple in 1981 and became its abbot in 1999. Known as the “CEO monk," he was one of the first monks in China to earn an MBA and turned the temple into a commercial enterprise, running kung fu shows and selling merchandise.

Local media noted that Shi has faced similar accusations in the past, including claims of embezzlement and fathering multiple children, though a provincial investigation in 2016 cleared him of those charges.

Reports of Shi attempting to flee with mistresses and children were dismissed by authorities as fake. Additionally, former monks have accused Shi of living a lavish lifestyle, owning a fleet of luxury cars, and misusing temple funds.
