The Bengaluru civic body admitted to errors in a detailed project report for the tunnel road project in the city, calling it a “compiling error". The commissioner, however, said one mistake does not mean the whole report was a “copy-paste job" as is being alleged.

A report by CNN-News18, highlighting the errors in the detailed project report (DPR) for Bengaluru’s Tunnel Road proposal, had left the government and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) embarrassed. The civic body chief has now come out and accepted that there were errors in the report.

“When giving the draft report to the banks for finances, we were thinking of financing the North-South and East-West Corridors together. Later, we decided to have the DPR for the North-South Corridor ready, and then proceeded to the East-West corridor. When changing the book report, in a hurry, the Table 15 in the Executive Summary saw a mistake. But, all the other chapters are consistent. The one page that had a mistake, it was a compiling error," said BBMP commissioner Tushar Girinath.

Girinath said Rodic Consultants, who prepared the report, have apologised for the error. “…What penalty should be awarded to the consultants, will be decided later. But we do not accept the allegation that because of one error, the entire DPR is a copy-paste job and that it’s a waste of expenditure," he said.

The BBMP has spent Rs 9.5 crore on its tunnel road DPR prepared by New Delhi-based Rodic Consultants Pvt Ltd, but the executive summary on Page 29 details traffic volumes at different cordon points. It mentions cities and towns in Maharashtra like Malegaon and Nashik.

The BJP had criticised the state government, raising questions if the project is needed in the first place. “The tunnel road itself is not needed. First, take care of the roads above. The Rs 9.5 crore used for the DPR is definitely a waste. There is no planning, that is why there are mistakes. What is the relation between Malegaon and Bengaluru?" asked leader of the opposition R Ashoka.

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who is also the city development minister, refused to comment on the faulty DPR.
