The Congress government in Karnataka announced it would adopt a zero-tolerance approach to drug-related cases in the state. Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara on Thursday told the legislative council that the government would bulldoze houses of owners who rent their houses to drug peddlers.

The “bulldozer justice" is adopted by BJP-led states, and the opposition has always criticised it. This is the first time that a senior Congress leader has announced he will resort to bulldozer action.

Parameshwara responded to a question during the Winter Session of the Karnataka Legislature and said over 300 foreign nationals have been arrested and deported for peddling drugs over the past two years.

“A lot of foreign nationals, many of them from African countries, have been caught smuggling and peddling drugs. We don’t know how they bring it in or supply it. We are monitoring their movements and have also identified the landlords who have rented houses to these people. We are prepared to go to the extent of bulldozing even the homes where the drug peddlers live on rent," he said.

He further shared actions being adopted by the state government to curb drug cases and said the police are conducting awareness campaigns against drugs in educational institutions.

Parameshwara further told the house that 4,168 drug-related cases were registered in 2024, with charge sheets filed in 4,091 cases. The number increased to 5,747 cases in 2025, of which investigations have been completed in 4,510 cases.

“The production, sale, and consumption of narcotics are increasing day by day globally. The sale of narcotics has transformed into a highly profitable business for sellers. Interstate and international networks are operating for enormous profits. Since these networks are active in almost all countries worldwide, this drug problem has become universal," Parameshwara added.

He asserted that the state government is determined to eliminate the drug menace from Karnataka.
