A Michigan man, Nathan Mahoney, was arrested after allegedly stabbing his employer, Erik Denslow, during a meeting. Police suspect it could be a "copycat" attack inspired by the recent UnitedHealthcare CEO murder.
Erik Denslow, president of Anderson Express was stabbed during a staff meeting.
A US man has been taken into custody after he allegedly stabbed the president of the company he worked for during a staff meeting. The stabbing is seen as a potential "copycat" attack inspired by the recent murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan.
According to a Fox News report, Erik Denslow, president of Anderson Express Inc., was attacked on December 17 in Michigan during a meeting at the company’s office.
The Fruitport Township Police Department said that Denslow was stabbed in the side by Nathan Mahoney, 32, a company employee who had joined Anderson Express only a few weeks back.
According to police, Mahoney left the meeting briefly at 9.20 a.m and then returned around 10 minutes later. He approached Denslow and allegedly stabbed him.
Mahoney fled the scene but was apprehended by officers 15 minutes later. Denslow, who underwent surgery, remains in serious but stable condition.
Police are yet to determine the motive behind the attack but Deputy Chief Greg Poulson was quoted as saying that it could be a possible "copycat" crime, given the recent fatal shooting of the UnitedHealthcare CEO.
Poulson told News 8 that the investigators are probing the accused's social media accounts to determine a motive for the act.
Mahoney has been charged with assault with intent to murder and fleeing police.
He is presently being held in the Muskegon County Jail on a $501,000 bond.
Anderson Express, a manufacturing company that serves the automotive and defense industries, expressed shock at the incident. A company spokesperson said that they were focused on supporting Denslow’s recovery and assisting employees affected by the assault.
Denslow, who was promoted to president of Anderson Express within a year of joining the company in 2022, is expected to make a full recovery. The company has not yet responded to further enquiries about the incident.
The stabbing comes just weeks after the murder of Brian Thompson, who was fatally shot outside a Manhattan hotel on December 4. Police arrested Luigi Mangione, 26, in connection with the crime.
