Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday dismissed the claims about a rift within the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) state unit and mocked the Congress, asking how many MLAs the party won in Delhi.
It comes after Punjab Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa claimed that over 30 AAP MLAs of the state’s ruling party were in touch with his party and could switch sides. He further claimed these MLAs have realised that staying with AAP may not be beneficial in the long run.
“He has been saying this for nearly three years… he should look at the performance of his party in Delhi again, for the third time," said Mann after meeting party chief Arvind Kejriwal at his Delhi residence.
The Congress party has not secured any seats in the Delhi assembly since 2015. However, this time, its vote share rose from around 4.6% to 6.6%.
The AAP meeting was attended by key party leaders, including CM Mann, Punjab Ministers, and legislators amid rumours of internal discontent within the AAP’s Punjab unit.
Kejriwal Next Punjab CM?
Dismissing the rumours that Arvind Kejriwal could potentially claim the Punjab CM’s post after Delhi poll rout, Mann said, “Let them say what they want to."
“We respect the mandate of the people of Delhi. The Delhi team was here as well. We have decided that we will make Punjab a model that can be presented to the whole country. Our volunteers are very dedicated; they are not going to get lured by promises," he said.
“The people of Punjab have been at the forefront of several national struggles.. the first MPs that were elected from AAP were from Punjab. We have 92 MLAs… we have risen from the ground up. Let the Congress say what it wants to," Mann added.
It comes after the BJP won 48 of 70 Assembly seats in the Delhi elections, ending AAP’s decade-long rule in the capital. Significantly, the BJP will form a government in the national capital after a hiatus of 27 years.
