US President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday described the New Orleans terror attack as an “act of pure evil" and linked the incident to illegal immigration.

He said that the crime rate in the United States has risen to an all-time high.

This comes after 10 people were killed while at least 30 others were injured as a truck driver rammed into a crowd at Canal and Bourbon Street in the southern US city. The incident occurred at 3.15 am during the New Year’s celebrations at Bourbon Street which is a historic tourist destination in the city’s French Quarter.

Donald Trump Reacts To Terror Attack

Reacting sharply to the incident, which is being probed by the FBI as an “act of terror" after initial denial, Trump said that the “criminals coming in are “far worse than the criminals we have" in the US, apparently hinting that the driver may be an illegal immigrant.

“When I said that the criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country, that statement was constantly refuted by Democrats and the Fake News Media, but it turned out to be true," Trump posted on Truth Social.

He extended condolences to the families of the victims of the attack and said that his incoming administration would support the city to recover from “this act of pure evil".

“The crime rate in our country is at a level that nobody has ever seen before. Our hearts are with all of the innocent victims and their loved ones, including the brave officers of the New Orleans Police Department. The Trump Administration will fully support the City of New Orleans as they investigate and recover from this act of pure evil!" Trump wrote.

How Did The Attack Take Place?

The vehicle, reportedly a truck rammed into the crowd celebrating New Year’s Day, causing mayhem on the streets. Disturbing videos surfaced of bodies lying on the streets and people running for life.

The driver of the vehicle exited and opened fire at the police which then retaliated and took down the man, the officials said.

New Orleans police superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said that the driver was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could.

“(The individual) was hell-bent on creating the carnage and damage he did," she said.

The FBI has taken over the case and is taking it forward as an “act of terror". It had initially contradicted the description of the incident by the city’s Mayor who called it a terror attack. However, later the FBI said that it is probing the case as an act of terrorism.

The driver died following the shootout with police, officials said.
