US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that Cuba was close to collapse, arguing that the island nation was no longer receiving oil or financial support from Venezuela, once its top backer.
Trump’s remarks come as Washington ramps up pressure on Havana following the US military’s seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in a deadly raid earlier this month, an operation ordered by Trump.
The Republican leader has repeatedly vowed to stop oil and money from Venezuela from reaching Cuba, signalling possible further action against the Communist-run island’s leadership.
“Cuba will be failing pretty soon. Cuba is really a nation that’s very close to failing," Trump told reporters on Tuesday.
“You know, they got their money from Venezuela. They got the oil from Venezuela. They are not getting that anymore," he added.
Trump has said the United States will effectively “run" Venezuela after Maduro’s former vice president, Delcy Rodriguez, became interim president and began governing the country under US oversight.
The United Nations human rights office has said the US raid in which Maduro was seized violated international law.
Human rights experts have also criticised Trump’s focus on Venezuelan oil, saying it echoed an imperialist approach and raised questions about US efforts to portray Maduro’s capture as a law enforcement operation aimed at curbing drug trafficking.
Earlier this month, Cuba’s president said Washington had no moral authority to force a deal on Havana, after Trump suggested the island should strike an agreement with the United States.
