The funeral of Pope Francis will take place on Saturday at 10:00am (0800 GMT) in the square in front of St Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican announced on Tuesday.
The coffin of the Argentine pontiff, who died on Monday aged 88, will then be taken inside the church and from there taken to the Rome basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore for burial.
The Vatican published Tuesday a photo and video of Pope Francis in his open coffin, dressed in a red robe with the papal mitre on his head and a rosary in his hand.
The images were taken in the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta, Francis’s residence at the Vatican.
Pope Francis was admitted to a Rome hospital on February 14 with bronchitis, which later turned into double pneumonia that almost killed him twice. He left hospital on March 23 and was due to undergo a strict two-month convalescence period. But the Argentine made a series of impromptu public appearances, looking increasingly weak.
Francis died of “cerebral stroke, coma, irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse", according to a death certificate released by the Vatican.
