United States President Donald Trump on Sunday Section 212(f) of the Immigration and ity Act (INA) to justify his take on pause migration from all “third-world countries".

“Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate," wrote Trump on Truth Social.

Section 212(f) gives the US president the power to block the entry of “any aliens or of any class of aliens" if allowing them in is viewed as harmful to America’s national interests.

Despite repeated appeals from several United Nations agencies — including the UN human rights office — to keep the doors open for asylum seekers, Trump has stood firm on his position.

In earlier posts on X, he also hinted at tougher steps, such as denaturalising migrants who “undermine domestic tranquility," cutting federal benefits for non-citizens, and removing foreign nationals seen as a “public charge, security risk, or non-compatible with Western Civilization."

The White House and the Department of Homeland Security have not yet explained how these new measures will be put into practice. However, the administration has already begun actions in line with the freeze. USCIS Director Joseph Edlow confirmed that asylum officers have been told to stop issuing decisions until “enhanced vetting can be completed for every applicant," stressing that public safety remains the main concern.

At the same time, the US State Department, headed by Secretary Marco Rubio, has paused visa processing for all travellers holding Afghan passports. Rubio called the decision a necessary security step, saying, “The United States has no higher priority than protecting our nation and our people."

These moves come in the wake of a shooting near the White House on Wednesday, where two Guard soldiers were critically injured. Spec Sarah Beckstrom, 20, later died from her injuries, while Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, is still in hospital, “fighting for life" as Trump said.
