The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) membership drive in West Bengal, which commenced in the last week of November, has seen party leader Dilip Ghosh emerge as front-runner. An internal report reveals that Ghosh has conducted the highest number of meetings for the drive, reaching 84 till December 15, with an aim to reach a century by December 31. While Ghosh has demonstrated significant progress, the report also highlights that some prominent MPs are yet to participate in the drive.

Ghosh’s contributions to the BJP are well-documented. Under his leadership, the party secured 18 Lok Sabha seats in Bengal in 2019.

“Last month, after the by-election got over, I have travelled rigorously. I first covered South 24 Parganas, then was asked to go to Junglemahal, then went to North Bengal. I’m an organisation man, that’s why whatever direction comes from the top, I religiously follow that. My party leaders have praised me for my performance, I’m happy but since am an organisation person, I give utmost priority to such programmes," Dilip Ghosh shared in a conversation with News 18.

In addition to his efforts in Bengal, Ghosh, the former State BJP President, also dedicated six days to Tripura, collaborating with Mondals and covering various locations.

The BJP has set an ambitious target of one crore members by the deadline of 31 December. According to a senior BJP leader, approximately 27 lakh memberships have been registered so far, with optimistic projections for further growth.

Ghosh, known for his sometimes-controversial statements that have drawn scrutiny, is regarded by a segment of party workers as an exceptional field organiser. His dedication to conducting a significant number of meetings, especially considering his seniority, has become a talking point within the party.

Sources emphasise the importance of the membership drive for the BJP in Bengal, particularly in light of the upcoming 2026 elections. The party aims to leverage the drive for a strong start to 2025.

With Sukanta Majumdar’s current role as a Central Government Minister, the BJP is actively seeking a new State President for Bengal. Potential candidates have been shortlisted and submitted to the central leadership in Delhi for a final decision.

“Dilipda is a ground-level organisation leader, he knows organisation is everything, that’s why even being so senior, his membership meeting records are so well," a senior leader told News18, highlighting the significance of Ghosh’s organisational skills.

The membership drive is of paramount importance for the BJP, say sources, as the party aims to use it as a springboard for a successful 2025.
