Bangladesh police have arrested the main accused in the lynching of Hindu garment factory worker Dipu Das, alleging that he played a key role in inciting the mob that carried out the killing, officials said.
According to officials, former teacher Yasin Arafat is believed to have played a key role in the planning and execution of the attack, which has sparked global condemnation amid ongoing atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh.
Das, 27, was forced to resign by his factory supervisors, on December 18 in Mymensingh district. He pushed out of his workplace, and handed over to an enraged mob of Islamists that beat him to death, hung his body and set fire to it. His colleagues reportedly joined the mob in killing him.
Police said that following Das’s killing, Arafat, who was arrested on Thursday, allegedly fled the area and went into hiding.
According to the officials, Das orchestrated the attack, inciting others to gather and target Das. His influence within the local community allegedly allowed him to quickly gather a large group, turning the situation into a fatal attack.
Arafat not only encouraged the mob, but personally dragged him to an intersection, where he was hanged from a tree and set on fire, the police added.
Arafat is reported to be a local resident who previously taught at a mosque. Authorities are now examining his role as a teacher to determine whether his influence went beyond the immediate events surrounding the attack.
The total number of arrests in the case has reached 21. Authorities are continuing the investigation to identify any other individuals who may have been involved in the incident.
Days after Dipu Das’s lynching, five other Hindu men died in Bangladesh. Amrit Mondal was beaten to death by a group of villagers in Rajbari district, Bajendra Biswas was shot dead in Mymensingh.
Hindu businessman Khokon Chandra Das, was stabbed and set on fire by a mob on New Year’s Eve in Shariatpur. He died while undergoing treatment in Dhaka.
A newspaper editor and businessman Rana Pratap, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Jessore district.
A 25-year-old Hindu man drowned after jumping into a pond in Naogaon district, while attempting to flee from a group of locals who were chasing him on suspicion of theft.
