A day after being removed from his post as Deputy Organiser of the DMK’s Youth Wing in Ranipet district, DMK functionary R. Deivaseyal has been suspended from the party following allegations of sexual abuse, forced marriage, and exploitation of multiple young women.
On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, who also serves as the Youth Wing Secretary, had announced Deivaseyal’s removal from his post.
This case has triggered widespread public outrage and a political storm in Tamil Nadu.
The suspension also come shortly after the Commission for Women (NCW) took suo motu cognisance of the case, calling the allegations “disturbing and grave", and demanded a detailed report from the Tamil Nadu Police within three days.
Allegations Made By The Woman
The case centres around a 20-year-old college student from Arakkonam, who alleges she was tricked and coerced into marrying Deivaseyal, only to later discover he was already married.
In her police complaint, the student claimed she was already married and undergoing divorce proceedings when Deivaseyal began stalking her. Despite knowing her situation, he allegedly threatened her and manipulated her into a second marriage on 31 January 2025, promising to use his political influence to resolve her ongoing case.
The woman further alleged that she later discovered he had a wife named D. Kanimozhi, who was not only aware of the second marriage but also allegedly supported Deivaseyal’s actions.
According to the woman, after the marriage, she faced daily physical abuse and was subjected to pressure to engage with other influential DMK members for sexual favours.
She also alleged that Deivaseyal had groomed and manipulated other young women, coercing them into sexual relationships with politicians.
“His job is to torture 20-year-old girls to sleep with politicians… no action is ever taken against him. When I complain he threatens to cut me into pieces. He tortured me in the car and told me to sleep with the men he pointed to… I can’t even leave my home. I couldn’t take my exams," the woman said.
Police Action
Following the woman’s complaint, the Arakkonam All Women Police registered a case against Deivaseyal, including in first wife, under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including, Section 296(b): Uttering obscene words in a public place; Section 75(2): Demanding sexual favours; Section 82(2): Polygamy; Section 351: Criminal intimidation.
Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing and said the case was being treated with seriousness due to the nature of the allegations and the public interest involved.
Accused Couple Seeks Anticipatory Bail
Meanwhile, Deivaseyal (37) and his wife Kanimozhi (35) have approached the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail. Their petition is scheduled for hearing before Justice N. Senthilkumar on Wednesday.
In their petition, the couple has denied all allegations, claiming the case is politically motivated and orchestrated by rivals. They also questioned the delay in filing the complaint, arguing that the alleged marriage occurred in January, while the FIR was filed only in May.
AIADMK Stages Protest
The issue has now become a full-blown political controversy, with opposition party AIADMK launching a fierce attack on the ruling DMK government. AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) has demanded the immediate arrest of Deivaseyal and accused the ruling party of shielding wrongdoers within its ranks.
He also alleged that police acted only after AIADMK MLA S. Ravi intervened on behalf of the victim, claiming that multiple earlier complaints had been ignored.
As part of its protest, AIADMK is staging a large demonstration in Ranipet district today.
