Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met US President Donald Trump at the White House on Friday amid the ongoing tensions over peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The meeting comes at a pivotal point when Zelenskyy is trying to persuade the White House to provide some form of US backing for Ukraine’s security against any future Russian aggression.

As both leaders met, Zelenskyy termed Trump’s meeting with him before Russian President Vladimir Putin a “good signal", but opposed the ceasefire call proposed by the US President. The Ukrainian President’s reaction came after Trump stated that " Zelensky will have to make compromises".

“We don’t just need a ceasefire. We’ve done that before — Putin violated it 25 times, including during your presidency, Mr. President," Zelenskyy was quoted by the Kyiv Post.

However, during the high-stakes meeting, Zelenskyy questioned Trump: “Will America stop military aid?"

According to reports, the agenda of the meeting primarily focuses on a minerals deal for the United States in return for Washington’s assurance of providing Kyiv with the security it needs to fight against Russia.

The deal is important as it forms the foundation of future talks on finding a peace deal for the war in Ukraine, which has now been on for more than three years.
