US President Donald Trump defended his push to cap foreign student admissions at elite universities like Harvard, saying international students are “troublemakers" as he suggested a 15 per cent limit on their enrollment.
“We don’t want radical people coming into our country as students and making trouble," Donald Trump said, adding, “We don’t want to see shopping centres explode. We don’t want riots. Many of those students didn’t go anywhere — they were troublemakers caused by the radical left."
Citing Harvard University- where foreign students reportedly make up around 31 per cent of the student body- Donald Trump said the institution must provide the government with a full list of international enrollees, including their countries of origin and any national security concerns.
“These countries aren’t helping us. They’re not investing in Harvard. We are," he said, questioning, “Why should 31 per cent of students be from other countries? I think a cap of 15 per cent makes more sense."
Donald Trump also argued that international students are limiting opportunities for Americans, claiming that many US citizens are being blocked from admissions. He said, “We have people who want to go to Harvard and other schools, [but] they can’t get in because we have foreign students there. I want to make sure foreign students are people who can love our country."
Calling Harvard university a “disaster" and accusing it of being “totally anti-Semitic", Donald Trump said, “They’ve taken over $5 billion. Every time they fight, they lose another $250 million. People are telling me we should use that money for trade schools. And I agree. They’ll teach people how to build AI."
