All set to return to the White House in about two weeks, US President-elect Donald Trump has been making waves with his repeated statements on absorbing Canada into the United States. In his latest remark, Trump has suggested that he might use “economic force" to make Canada the 51st American state.
He further refused to rule out military action to ‘retake’ the Panama Canal and acquire Greenland from Denmark — part of a broader expansionist agenda that he has promoted since winning the November 2024 elections.
Trump, speaking in Mar-a-Lago, was asked if he was considering using military force to acquire Canada.
“No, economic force," he responded. “Because Canada and the United States, that would really be something."
Dismissing the suggestion by US President-elect, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a post on X, “There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States."
“Workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other’s biggest trading and security partner," he added.
