Trump’s sweeping claims of an economic turnaround triggered online backlash, with critics and fact checks challenging his figures on inflation and investment.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday delivered a speech claiming his administration had engineered a dramatic economic turnaround through aggressive tariffs, sweeping tax cuts and what he described as the fastest industrial revival in American history.
He credited tariffs with forcing companies to bring manufacturing back to the United States, saying factory construction across sectors such as automobiles, artificial intelligence and energy was at record levels.
The speech, however, drew sharp criticism online, with several of Trump’s claims seen as conflicting with official data released by US government agencies and, in some cases, figures cited by his own administration.
Americans grappling with high prices took to social media to express skepticism, with some describing the address as defensive in tone.
“If you missed Trump’s speech, here’s a summary: Amazing economy, no inflation, Biden is terrible, golden age, goodnight," posted Truth Seeker (@TruthZone).

UK broadcaster Sky News’ US correspondent Mark Stone told viewers that the president’s “tone seemed to me to be angry, to be frustrated".
Progressive political group Really American also criticised Trump over his claim that he had slashed drug prices by 600 percent.

Fact Checks For Trump
During the speech, Trump repeatedly attacked his Democratic predecessor and made expansive claims about his record. Several of those assertions were questioned by an analysis published by the Associated Press.
Trump blamed Democrats for handing him what he called an “inflation disaster", claiming it was “the worst in the history of our country", while asserting that prices were now “falling rapidly".

Official data does not support that claim. Inflation has remained broadly steady at around 3 percent since Trump took office, after easing significantly toward the end of Joe Biden’s presidency. While inflation peaked at 9.1 percent in June 2022 amid supply chain disruptions, pandemic-era stimulus and the Ukraine war, surveys show Americans continue to feel pressure from high grocery and energy prices. Inflation also ticked up again after Trump announced new tariffs in April.
Trump has also provided no evidence to back his claim that he secured $18 trillion in investment for the United States. Publicly available figures, including those cited on the White House’s own website, put the number closer to $9.6 trillion, a total that appears to include commitments made during Biden’s presidency.
Trump’s electoral victory, while decisive, also fell short of a historical landslide. He won 312 electoral votes, fewer than Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012 and Bill Clinton in 1992 and 1996. By comparison, landslide victories included Franklin D Roosevelt’s 523 electoral votes in 1936, Lyndon Johnson’s 486 in 1964, Richard Nixon’s 520 in 1972 and Ronald Reagan’s 525 in 1984.
