An earthquake of magnitude 5.6 hit Afghanistan today, Reuters reported citing European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), with tremors felt in parts of India, including the Delhi-NCR region.
The quake was at a depth of 121 km (75 miles), EMSC said while the epicentre was 164 km east of Baghlan. Earlier, the EMSC reported the quake at a magnitude of 6.4, and later revised it to 5.6.
There were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties.
Afghanistan is located in a complex and seismically active region where the Indian Plate collides with the Eurasian Plate.
This collision is the primary driver of the region’s earthquakes. Moreover, the Hindu Kush mountain range, which runs through northeastern Afghanistan, is particularly prone to earthquakes.
A major fault line even runs directly through or near the city of Herat, making it particularly vulnerable.
Owing to this, earthquakes occur frequently in and around Afghanistan due to this active tectonic setting.
